Support A Hero Update 4-26-20

Hello Everyone,

I would like to thank everyone who has supported this mission to donate PPE to your local hospitals. The response was amazing. Support A Hero was able to raise over 2,330 dollars to pay for PPE supplies for “Frontline Workers”.

With the money that was donated, we were able to purchase 50 pairs of protective goggles,100 pairs of protective glasses, 2000 surgical masks, and 20 high quality reusable respirators from 3m along with 20 pairs of P100 cartridges. Those 3M reusable masks can be used instead of the disposable N95 masks and can worn for much longer. I will post a link to an article I read that persuaded me to purchase the reusable masks.

It hasn’t all gone smoothly though. We originally had a deal for 2500 KN95 masks instead of the 3M masks but sadly that deal fell through. (My vendor “disappeared” and wouldn’t respond back to me, thankfully I hadn’t paid him yet.) Also an order for surgical caps and booties was also cancelled, and a $993 order for face shields never arrived from China. And, lastly, all of the items needed to be sourced from resellers at inflated prices.

I do feel fortunate, however, that I was able to have some success with purchasing the items above. For that I am grateful. It is like the wild, wild, west out there when it comes to getting medical supplies, as I’m sure you have heard.

I am also donating another forty 3M Respirators with filter cartridges on top of what is listed above directly to frontline workers. This is coming from the money my wife Alicia and I had promised to donate to this effort. Pictures of the PPE are in this post.

***Co-workers, if you need one of the reusable respirators, reach out to me on Facebook Messenger or at work and I’ll tell you how to get one.

On top of that, everyone who is following Support A Hero has helped tremendously by getting the word out about donations.

By sharing my posts on Facebook, you have helped my hospital’s Emergency Department at Foothill Presbyterian receive generous donations of close to 1,400 surgical masks, 10 extra 3M Respirators, 40 medical gowns, 200 face shields, at least 300 KN95 masks, dozens of N95 masks, 10 boxes of protective gloves, 600 protective glasses and a huge amount of homemade masks and mask “ear protectors” from generous people all around Southern California.

These donations were given by:

Vee “Vincent” Loo (ER Nurse)- KN95 masks, protective glasses

Paulina and Sean Moore- 3M reusable respirators

Jane Li- KN95 masks

Nick Lam- Surgical Masks

Meagan Murray (ER Nurse)- Face shields

Kristina Valencia (ER Nurse)- KN95 masks

Christina Kvalheim- Shoe covers (booties)

Dr. Bryce and Amy Tsai- Surgical masks, gowns, gloves

Erin Stevens and Family (School Nurse)- face shields, ear protectors, cloth masks.

And there are more who donated anonymously by just dropping items off at the hospital.

Thank you all for your generosity and support.

My Emergency Department has also been getting fed on a regular basis by generous restaurants in the area, like Little Caesars, BJs Pizza, and Chic-fil-a to name a few. All of the donations are sincerely appreciated. Thank you so much to all of the restaurants in the area who have donated meals to our staff at the hospital.

When I started this project, I wasn’t sure where it would go or how it would turn out. I have to say, I am very humbled by all of the support I have received. I am so very thankful for all of your donations and compassion for those of us trying our best at our hospitals. Thank you, once again, for all of your support.

With enormous gratitude,

John (Barry) McManaman RN BSN
